Pedestrian Bridge

Firm
Pedestrian
BridgeCharlotte,
North CarolinaSpring
2008Derived
from a diagram comparing the speed of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, the
bridge consists of two complementary elements. The
first is a pair of large upward arching stairways, whose meandering paths
represent the tempo of the typical pedestrian traveler. Atop these large
archways are areas of repose, which provide pedestrians with views of the
distant downtown skyline. In addition, the large arches serve as a gateway,
signifying the entrance to the campus and creating an icon for the University. The
second element is a straight path constructed of glass and steel that
represents the rapid rate at which vehicles move through the site, providing
students with a direct route over the intersection.
