Constructed in 1894, this unusual elliptical brick building originally served as a stable for the iconic Pearl Brewery complex. Converted into a warehouse in the early 20th century and then into a banquet facility in 1950, the building’s original features had been obscured by layers of paint, bricked-in window openings, “flocked” red walls and suspended ceilings.
The Pearl Stable project, completed in 2006, encompassed the restoration of the entire building, including the original roof framing. The front pediment, which had been removed in the 1940's, was reconstructed from historic photographs and original drawings. The exterior paint was stripped and the brickwork restored. Bricked-in windows were re-opened and infilled with custom wood windows, and a new steel framed mezzanine was added with a pair of sweeping stairs that mirror the elliptical interior walls. Custom chandeliers, as well as architectural and theatrical lighting were created. New systems were installed throughout, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire sprinkler. Handicapped accessible entrances and restrooms were also added. The Stable now serves as a unique event space for the thriving Pearl Brewery cultural complex.
