Planning strategy.
The central axis of the pavilion is positioned along the direction Palazzo Reale - Via Roma. Symmetrical shift of sheds is due to the axis Via Pietro Micca. The intersection of this axis with the central axis is marked by the advertising stella. The intention to preserve the view from Via Giuseppe Garibaldi to Palazzo Madama accounts for removal of the pavilion from the cross axis of the square.
Idea of the volume.
The idea of the symmetrical shift of transparent “dragonfly” wings forming a glass shed, then growing into a pergola, has formed a three-nave pavilion, emphasizing longitudinal movement. The effect of wrong perspective is created in outdoor aisles (side galleries) due to the diagonal shift, while the nave (central gallery) sets the view over Plalazzo Reale in a visual frame.
The nave features exhibition hall as well as the connection space.Due to the ribbed structure of the main volume, the aisles are visually linked with the interior, and together with the main gallery can function as an exhibition space. While the pavilion is closed, the aisles can be used for temporary exhibitions, performances, public meetings as well as provide shed.
Construction/sustainability/usability.
The core of the structure is the 27 three-hinged glued wood arcs, positioned along the main axis with 580 mm spacing. This arc structure is hing-jointed on the metallic frame base. The base is anchored to the surface of the square. Thus the pavilion is easy to construct and dismantle. The arcs are linked by the two cross-beam and the double diagonal beam. Between the diagonal beams there is a drainage chute (detail1). Short spacing between the arcs provides even diffused lighting in the gallery, while being effective sunscreen, cutting down the air-conditioning expenses.
Stained-glass windows - “Saint Gobain” SGG STADIP BIOCLEAN
Transparent roof – “Pilkinton” Profilit glass systems with transparent termal insulation.
Ventilation – natural aeration.
Dry-closet system is used for the pavilion.
The pavilion features state-of-the-art communication means (Wi-FI, UMTS, Internet).
The number of e-net users may be increased with the addition of the gallery space.
