Pavilion 516 «Books» is situated in VDNH Park and Exhibition Center in Moscow, Russia. The facades of the Pavilion resemble the ancient Temple of Hephaestus in Athens. A Greek temple is an architectural image of the union of people and gods.
The Books Pavilion has never changed its purpose through its entire history. Deciding on the main ideas to keep and enhance we chose: openness to all new, timeless relevance and comprehensive diversity - starting from books and leisure time-spending.
The concept of the renewed pavilion implies a form when historical elements, created in the soviet-era, meet a rigid classic space, with its democracy and coziness of a public space interior. Space and limited area of the Books pavilion are supposed to be effectively used, considering accurate zoning and multi-functional purpose. The important part of composing the interior was to keep the so-called «spirit» of the historical place in order to give visitors an idea of a book as a timeless object.
IDEA: Several zones, developed on the ground floor, provide various scenarios. Every zone of the space is a good spot for work: each table has an electrical output and a table lamp. The working place is provided with soft custom-designed armchairs. Light and meditative space sets the right mood to get into serious read contemplation. Single light sources can be adjusted in density for individual preferences. Quality furnishing materials and elements of vegetation aim to develop comfortable atmosphere for a durable stay.
The working zone is suitable for holding lectures, thematic events, or even parties dedicated to literary launch events. In the reading hall a visitor can choose and read any book, and buy it later in the store. The space of the old reading hall is now divided in three: working zone, lounge zone and a lecture hall. The segmentation allows applying new functions and makes the space transformable.
We also set a second tier above the working zone. The view from above provides new angles of the whole space. The second level serves as a more private reading hall.
Second floor in the Pavilion is designed for hosting meetings and conferences. In renewed space two symmetrical rooms were adapted to business meetings with a common waiting area and a lobby.
CAFÉ and STORE:
Any modern platform, and the modern reading format, are inseparable from coffee culture. The coffee shop zone is situated directly in the pavilion, in close reach from any zone.
The store, situated on the ground floor near the cafe, is an important part in the pavilion concept. To stay relevant the bookstore keeps a collection of analog and e-books, picked by curators. Professional consultants give personal reading recommendations.
MAIN ABOUT THE DESIGN:
To transform into the current light and modern interior, the pavilion underwent serious restoration works.
Planning solution:
The basis of the whole space is formed upon the revealed axial classical composition. The main functional zones are placed symmetrically and create enfilade composition. Permeable glass doors and partitions allow observe the whole space and isolate the reading hall.
Texture and color:
Applied facing materials are: massive wooden planks, glass blocks, decorative plaster. Textures and colours reflect the essence of the space, and unveil its new faces and angles.
Ergonomics and comfort:
Some of the furniture items are custom made - to achieve the right perception of the interior through details. Another important part of the interior is illumination: functional lighting at the working desks, decorative/art lighting.
