The Pause.Rewind.FastForward House is a major renovation/addition to an existing home on Figure Eight Island in North Carolina. After having an addition carried out a few years ago by another architect, the clients approached Kersting Architecture to enlarge the beach front home to accommodate additional guest and family. Our first act was to strip the existing structure of the recent addition. Below it was the bones of the original midcentury modern beach cottage, with low pitch roof lines and a centralized floor plan. It was up on this that a new floor was added, along with two perpendicular wings which extend out to create a central entry courtyard. A "butterfly" roof was designed to capture rain-water on the naturally dry island.
The primary emphasis of the project was connecting outdoor spaces and water-views (ocean and marsh, respectively) on both sides of the home. Expansive use of glass, as well as the bleeding of form and material between indoors and out was employed to enhance this effect. The main intervention was a steel staircase which connects all floors and spaces to the naturally-lit core. The stair was detailed in such a way as to be as minimal and light as possible, as not to disrupt the connection between ocean side and marsh side spaces.
