With Paty Modern, there is comfort in modernity, a balance of modern architectural ideals and traditional southern vernacular. Sharp, simplistic geometries and long spans of glass are softened through a wooden material palette and ceiling heights that are generous, yet comfortable. References to shotgun/railroad houses are adopted, but challenged; with the traditional, off-centered circulation axis bent 90° to create a courtyard and exterior public space. Large, storefront windows on the main floor expose the living room and kitchen, connecting the interior, social spaces to the porch and courtyard. Above, these windows line circulation paths, offering views to below without exposing private living quarters.
The building’s hearth, a tall, anchoring mass which draws contrast to the house’s Cypress skin, protrudes from the terrace canopy, and functions as a fireplace, media hub, geothermal access point and structural roof cantilever. An atrium above the kitchen imbues natural light from the terrace eliminates the need for a ceiling fixture, naturally cools the space through the stack effect, and visually connects each level to its center. Both hearth and atrium facilitate circulation and organizational hierarchy through their solid and void relationship respectively.
Natural light is abundant as colors of light mix throughout; the sun rising in the master suite, setting on the porch and channeling through the atrium, strengthens the connection between earth and sky, an experience that culminates at a terrace level with exposure to a spectrum of sunlight and panoramic views in all direction.
