To take advantage of views, allow natural light, and control the harsh west sun, two distinct sides were designed for this library that resides in a park like setting. One side faces Main Street to the distant west. This side pays homage to iconic "Hill Country" vernacular employing limestone walls, metal roofs, devices to shade the west sun on fenestrations, and a front porch. Tucked behind these limestone walls are the library support and operations areas.
The plan is organized around a light filled two story volume main circulation space punctuated by a screen porch perched from the upper floor that seems to invite you up to the enjoy the view. All reading areas, the internet cafe, quiet room, and youth activity room are nestled along the east side - overlooking the rolling Hill Country landscape. Exterior building materials, like limestone and flat-seam metal panels, were brought inside to reinforce the connection to the outside and used in tandem with structural steel and reclaimed longleaf pine.
On the east side, transparent walls with light framed steel shade flaps allow panoramic views to a tree lined natural creek bed and beyond. The facade steps back, capturing northeastern light and allows the shadows from the mature oak trees to shade the backyard.
