This concept house is designed in opposition to those which exploit nature. We, as environmentally conscious architects, deeply believe that good design does not have to consume yet another piece of the natural landscape. A relaxing, people friendly environment can also be created within a small city plot lacking natural amenities such as woods, cliffs or sea views. Our patio house represents this philosophy.
This affordable concept house was designed for a couple with one or two children. The main living space is situated around a green courtyard on the upper level. This provides the important elements which the site lacks, such as privacy, light and a pleasant view. Above this, a roof patio with a concealed hot tub provides another place to relax after a long day at work. Surrounding the house, the rest of the 4 acre site is designed as a garden, rain water pond and driveway. All of the excavation material is reused within the site to bury the lower part of the building. This minimizes the environmental impact and reduces costs. Additional sustainable features of the house include the structure of the ground level, which is made of solid recyclable plastic or second hand cement blocks. Furthermore, the upper level is constructed as a frame made of sustainable timber. Lastly, the roof is 100% covered with photovoltaic roof tiles and solar water heater panels.
