This Patagonia store housed in a fully renovated landmark building originally built as a cotton printing factory in 1874, later becoming a poultry, game and meat distribution house in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, highlights the neighborhood’s commercial past as it incorporates historically appropriate locally sourced reclaimed and industrial materials, creating a layering of time and history in the former “white box” space. Extensive research of the area identified past architectural features used, which were incorporated into the design.
Reclaimed timber is used extensively: flooring throughout the sales areas of reclaimed, original face, natural edge long leaf Heart Pine was sourced from an Upper Eastside townhouse and a historic industrial deconstruction in Red Hook Brooklyn; and reclaimed softwood joists installed as ceiling beams were sourced from deconstructed warehouses underneath the Highline on Manhattan’s West Side, just blocks from the store.
Newly installed ceiling beams support a fully functioning custom manufactured meat rail, with genuine trolleys and customized hooks, referencing the site’s former uses whilst displaying merchandise.
Perimeter walls are finished with reclaimed brick salvaged from a Westchester, NY apartment building. White subway tile, evoking former meatpacking facilities, is a contrasting backdrop to the brand’s colorful merchandise. Overall store lighting is LED.
Four full-height custom-welded steel window frames fabricated on site with transparent wired glass divides the main sales area. Complementing these are additional site built steel windows with Stipolite wired glass to the rear of the store. On-site building kept materials and labor local minimizing the embedded energy costs of shipping.
Fitting rooms have reclaimed corrugated steel ceilings; light fixtures and forged clothing hooks from Brooklyn, NY; onsite manufactured steel doors and reclaimed timber benches; and also feature windows with Stipolite wired glass built onsite.
Antique furniture, including meatpacking platforms and butcher blocks, display merchandise throughout the store and create a lounge area at the fitting rooms.
