The homeowners want to have a modern West Coast home in a small but artistic community, whereby they will be able to sufficiently reduce their energy consumption. This will be the first PH residence on Gabriola Island that is located in the Straight of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the mainland. The residence is located at the top of a bluff which provides views of the neighbouring islands and the Pacific Ocean. With large triple-glazed windows to take in the view, as well as, facing south, this will allow the residence to large solar gains and abundant natural light. Prefabricated wall panels consisting of 2x10 wood studs and roof panels consisting of 16" TJIs, both filled with rockwool insulation will retain heat in the winter and keep the home cool during the summer. As there is a large amount of rain in this region, there is a 9,900 gallon rainwater cistern underground for the households’ use of water. Local materials are being used in this project from BC lumber, rockwool, locally manufactured fiberglass windows, locally made prefab panels and standing-seam metal roofing. The homeowners are looking forward to their new home which will be their piece of artistry.
