The school site of the "Royal Atheneum Etterbeek' is located in a former castle park in Etterbeek. The project brief consists of building a new kindergarten and the reconstruction of the exterior space. All of the existing plantings were retained. The construction of the landscape was significant and included the construction of a small amphitheater, seating areas around trees, and a playground.
The building itself is inviting and has a clear and readable plan in which all functions are brought together under one big gable roof, as under "Mothers umbrella." The ten classes are L-shaped clustered around a multipurpose room, which opens to the outside play. Six classes and the multipurpose room located on the ground floor. On the first floor there are four classes and the necessary technical rooms. Classes are every two clustered around a common entrance and bathroom. Five classes have a "window" to the multipurpose room. The exterior finish of the façades will be in a thermally treated wood planking. Along with the green roof will make the building fully accords with its green surroundings. Besides the inherent sustainable qualities this design also aspires to be a healthy school, with a good indoor climate and made from healthy materials with minimal energy consumption. This new kindergarten is built according to the passive house standard. It is subsidized by the Flemish Community as one of the 24 pilot projects "passive school" and by the IBGE (Brussels Institute for Environmental Management) selected as "exemplary building Energy and Eco-Construction".
