PROGRAM: Conversion of an existing industrial complex, addition of new public uses: offices, hotel, cinema, fine arts centre, shops and services.SITE: The centre of Zagreb, near the Lisinski concert hall, the railway station and the City Hall, at the end of the green axis, between the old and the new part of the city.SOLUTION: The key question of this project is how to integrate the Paromlin complex into the urban fabric, both from the program and formal aspect, still keeping in mind and respecting the existing physical structure of the site. The new functions are inserted into the existing shells, making a clear difference between the old and the new. This way, a new trace of human activities is being added, enriching the historical continuity of the complex, and establishing a connection between its past and future. At the same time, the mix of different uses will generate activities all day long.On the other hand, by clearing up the green axis from all the built structures, the railway station is emphasized as an urban landmark. Considering the fact that this open space does not have the transit as its primary function, it is necessary to introduce programs which would transform it into a destination. In this case, an open air stage and a panoramic wheel are proposed. The open air stage is supposed to attract visitors by hosting different kinds of cultural and entertainment events, while the panoramic wheel should provide the visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy the unobstructed views over the city and all its landmarks. At the same time, the wheel itself would become a new landmark, an intriguing object provoking the citizens' interest for this site.
