PIQUE was selected for a private design competition to win the commission of transforming this existing auto garage into a private residence just outside of Paris. The existing building with it's original 1920's iron metal work is much lower than the surrounding structures making the access to sunlight critical. Our team put an enormous amount of effort into a solar analysis. This derived a "hot spot" of sunlight that captured sun year-round. We designated this space as an open-air courtyard and carefully designed the three surfaces to manage the sun light through the year. Clear glazing allows light in the winter when solar heat gain is desirable. Solid triangular walls block direct sunlight in summer when solar heat gain is problematic and translucent panels diffuse the light in the middle seasons. We call this central piece "The Lantern."
