PARIS ARQUITECTUM 2009 - DANCE SCHOOL FOR MOULIN ROUGE COMPETITION - The Anti-Boulevard
The New Dance School for the Moulin Rouge is proposed as an artifact of socio-cultural preservation. It is a direct reaction to the boulevardier experience, occupying the existing linear void while reflecting its current surroundings. The proposal disrupts existing circulation patterns in order to isolate a specific, controlled experience, expressing function over form. The exterior obstructs the open flow of the boulevard, pressuring a vertical skyward gaze along its entire length.The proposal also seeks to be a contemporary reconfiguration of the surrounding site context. The interior program is isolated at various suspended heights within the main chamber space. This creates a segregated pedestrian corridor enveloped by darkness. The contrast provokes sensual exploration and expression amidst an intertwining play of vibrant light and visceral emptiness. The expansion and contraction of clustering patrons exemplifies the varying intensity of performance provided by cabaret acts. These range from large theatrical productions to private performances that leave only hints in the dark.
