The generating idea of the project is to restore a strong link between the beach and the space behind it, including a bond, which is based on the elimination of all vertical obstacles. So the permeability between the two becomes persistent and widespread along the whole stretch of coastline. Height differences from time to time are overcome by a horizontal system, with low impact on the surrounding landscape and strongly integrated into it.
To date, the area of Le Ghiaie is intensively exploited during the day, even the hour of sunset have a strong attraction for the users, but there is no sequel. Hence the idea of establishing a system of architectural spaces and perception that highlight the beauty of the place even at night. The idea is to give to the citizens and visitors the chance to enjoy moments of the day that until now have not been exploited.
The cycle path is characterized by a dense and extensive network of routes that involve the entire competition area. The area of the existing sports facilities is completely open, expanding the breath of the waterfront to the foot of the historic bastion. The paths merge with the space eliminating the existing architectural barriers and bringing the walk from the beach. For the footpaths two materials were chosen: granite quarries and reassembled wood. The first material is deeply rooted in the traditions of the island, while the second is a more modern material of very low impact on the maintenance, which comes from the recovery of most noble wood manufacturing and exploits recycling technologies. For the waterfront, the project proposal suggests a continuous system of steps that, in addition to overcoming the difference, offer a continuous ribbon of sits coasting the shore. In fact the walk lean out into the sea, merging with the beach in the form of a single identity but with differences of matter which refer to different roles. The steps then continue east to reclaim the waterfront now occupied by sports facilities. The walkway widens and becomes rest area with water games. The steps grow in number absorbing the difference in height between the current athletics track and the waterfront , making the area ideal for the representation of events overlooking the sea and the islet of Scoglietto.
