While the program statement called for the creation of a sculpture garden just outside of the Milwaukee Art Museum, it was meant to be the framework upon which the true purpose of the project is based: the design a new building technology.Through trial and error, the technology was developed through an iterative process, which started with the selection of an inspirational image and ended with a prototype. In the interim, the design was developed through physical modelling and finding, then exploiting, emergent characteristics.Situated near Calatrava’s addition to the art museum, which introduced the city to kinetic architecture, the goal of the design was to create a sense of movement.Based on an existing building technology (simple CMUs), the design gets its variability through the placement of five unique elements. The interior stays constant to create a calm background for displaying art.
