The Parallel Apartment has been selected as the winner of the competition, the topic of which is to create new typologies for contemporary life.
Seeking a new typology
What will happen to outdoor living when apartments have replaced “courtyard houses”?
The Parallel Apartment is an exploration to make a new typology in finding an answer to this question, which offers wider and more diverse “architectural” possibilities to contemporary life. Promenades, open air rooms, and others are the elements that were added to the apartment for this purpose.
Courtyard as long as the lot
The Parallel Apartment consists of ten houses as a single unit on the floors and one house on the ground floor. In the Parallel Apartment, contrary to the conventional procedure, the yard does not end in the lobby and the lobby does not end in the ground floor house. The courtyard continues as a continuous landscape up to the roof of the ground floor unit. So, we will have a yard that is the length of the land, which is both a path for walking and a green lobby that leads to a communal cafe’ garden at the end.
The facade as a living form
The facade of the Parallel Apartment, instead of a shell or facade, is the flow of lifestyles inside it. Promenades can be a path for walking, pet jumping, and other diverse moments. Open air rooms are located between the promenade and the house, which are adjacent to the living room for gathering or spending the night or next to the private area for bathing.
Common portions as a club
In the Parallel Apartment, collective activities are not distributed in different sector of the basements under the title of common portions. Instead of that, parking lots go to the lowest floors and spaces like a pool, gym, cinema, and others gather around each other like a club. This organization enables various usage scenarios for the residents while giving character to the common portions.
Parallel editing
The Parallel editing technique in cinema is a specific cross cutting technique that alternating between two or more scenes that happen simultaneously in different locations within the world of the film. In this technique, different scenes are alternately cut together. The Parallel Apartment seeks to do this; Synchronizing events such as running, barbecuing, bathing, and others by cutting these space-times together.
Exterior Open-Air room
The room is a closed space in which the indoor air flows and the terrace is an open space that is connected to the outside air, while the Open-Air room is a hybrid combination of these qualities. A room with outside air that is ventilated through outdoor air conditioning methods by using elements such as infrared radiant heater and sprinkler. The Parallel houses have rooms for bathing or spending the night, which gives residents a different experience in connection with the outside air.
Interior Open-Air room
The Open-Air room has appeared differently on the first to fifth floors of the Parallel Apartments. In order that, one can enjoy the outside air in a room with exterior materials and the outside view while that room is placed inside the house. This room is like a capsule of the outside world inside the interior space, and two channels on the sides keep the airflow in it.
