Universal Design Studio has designed the interior of the restaurant and members’ lounge at London’s new Design Museum designed by John Pawson.
The restaurant, operated by Prescott & Conran is located on the top floor of the museum’s new home on Kensington High Street and features a rotating programme of guest chefs.
The restaurant; Parabola and Members’ Room are orientated to exploit the views onto west London’s Holland Park. Large, high-polish pewter bars in both spaces reflect the seasons outside, making the park a permanent and ever-changing element of the interior.
Working with leading manufacturers Benchmark, Flos and Vitra, Universal Design Studio customised archival pieces and created bespoke lighting and furniture especially for the new Design Museum.
The restaurant is conceived to be an integral part of the museum as well as a stand-alone experience, with the dining room operating from morning to late night.
The dual aspect room which enjoys views over the museum atrium and public gallery on one side, and Holland Park on the other provides a lively, textured and colourful transition space between inside and out.
By contrast the single aspect Private Members’ Room is intimate and darker in tone. Mirror wall panels sit behind the polished pewter bar, black walls create the backdrop for a collection of design icons photographed by Philip Sayer while blue and black upholstered Mariposa sofas by Barber & Osgerby for Vitra and new blue lacquered low tables from Barber & Osgerby’s Wood Bench range for Vitra populate the lounge area.
