BA Arch - Thesis
During the last year of my studies at University of Lincoln I worked on a project called “PolyArk II” that combined research taking place at the Architectural Association. For my final comprehensive design project I designed a Paper Recycling Mill using AutoCAD 2010 to design floor plans, details, sections, isometric details and final visualisation.
Inspiration
The ‘Potentiality’of an object is not its name but its properties. It’s what can be done with an object, not what the name suggest and prescribes as the action to take.
This project seeks to examine the potential of the surrounding area to form its structure gathered from the wreckage of Slough Bus Station which forms the rubble foundations. The walls are made from reclaimed paper pulp acquired from
the waste paper recycle bins and the nearby recycling depot.
The structure also examines the potential of lines of mass and form to cultivate a journey to lead the passengers through transitional spaces until they have entered the interior. The exterior acts to pull in the public to interact with the facade and to pass through its skin, into the inner workings of the factory. The facade acts to publicises the activity held within the factories walls acting as a beacon of encouragement to show people the benefits and possibilities of recycling.
