Pan American Library / Workshop completed 2014 / North Philadelphia PA The Pan American Charter School was founded in 2008 by the nonprofit Congreso to offer Philadelphia students a K-8 “student-centered” bilingual education in English and Spanish. An active community center with growing programming, the school’s previously underutilized 1500 square-foot library area had to be flexible enough to serve both as the school’s multi-media library as well as a meeting place for student, parent, and teacher groups ranging in size from 2 to 50. To meet these needs, Ten to One designed a modular furniture system that allows a single piece to function as a desk, bookshelf, storage, and lounge seating. The pieces also function as organizing devices within the space. Multiple pieces can be quickly and easily moved and connected to each other by magnets and then configured in numerous ways, from small desk groupings to large conversation circles. Using affordable materials and the application of super graphics, the space was transformed into a colorful, vibrant and super-flexible environment.
