This project in the community of Tambillo is a part of the Palenques Culturales project conceived by Caá Porá Architects, Siete86 Architects and the Casa Ochún Foundation. The Palenques Culturales project is a component of an extensive investigation concerning the cultures of African descent on the Pacific coast of Ecuador that is being carried out by a multidisciplinary team coordinated by the Ochún Foundation in Quito, Ecuador. In partnership with this foundation, we have been visiting communities within the delta of Cayapas River, on the northwestern border between Ecuador and Colombia. Dozens of small and economically impoverished communities form the cradle of a vivacious, passionate and profound culture that has historically transcended all obstacles. UNESCO recently inscribed this culture as part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015.
We propose that the Palenques have a role in unifying these communities. They are safe and fun spaces, where different generations can meet and work together so that the oral knowledge of hundreds of years is not lost. These spaces also serve as a reminder of the historical ways of construction in these places. We work together with artisans and older members of the community to recuperate distinct special relationships, construction details, and materials that have been endemically developed in each community. These aspects are commonly at risk of being lost in a homogenous progression to generic modernity and standardized projects that are not developed with these climates and individual cultures in mind.
In Tambillo the Palenques Culturales project takes form as a center for dance performance, school for the education of musicians and dancers, and workshops for the creation of musical instruments. We hope that this new community nucleus will be a space of refuge where many of deep-rooted issues of social health can be healed. With the possibility of new jobs (artistic, touristic amongst others) this construction will only live through the many uses that the community members give it. After many consultations and visits, we hope to have achieved the creation of one of the pieces that will help this community continue in its developmental path in a sustainable and contextually aware manner.
