Architecture and Interior Drawn from the Spirits of Zanzibar
A resort earns its character when it belongs to its island before it belongs to its guests. On the east coast of Zanzibar, where powder-white sand meets the Indian Ocean, Paje Beach Resort takes its whole identity from that principle. SPECTRUM Architecture authored the project across every discipline, from architecture to interior, drawing the design around the three guiding spirits of Zanzibar: nature, culture, and the craft traditions that connect them. Each spirit shapes a part of the resort, and the first of them draws nature directly inside.
Where Nature Enters the Building
The reception lobby sets the tone from the first step inside. Bathed in natural light, it opens around an inner garden that brings the lush Zanzibar landscape indoors and deepens the sense of biophilia across the space. Greenery, light, and water move together in an organic flow that merges the natural and built environments. This openness continues through the resort, where light-filled spaces and open layouts invite the outdoors in and keep the passage between interior and exterior seamless.
Culture as Design Material
Beyond nature, Zanzibar's cultural tapestry surfaces in every detail of the interiors, where traditional Swahili motifs blend with modern aesthetics to celebrate the island's multicultural heritage. Handcrafted work carries that history further. Intricate wood carvings, woven textiles, and locally made decor honor the island's legacy, while contemporary touches keep the spaces fresh and timeless. Local materials such as wood, stone, and woven fiber reinforce the sense of place throughout.
The Hand of the Artisan
Woven into the fabric of the resort, the artisanal spirit of Zanzibar carries this cultural story further. Custom-designed furniture and intricate textile artwork enrich the interiors and give guests a sense of discovery, each piece telling the story of the local artisans whose skills reach every corner of the resort. Carved wooden furniture and locally woven fabrics create a warm, personal atmosphere, tied closely to the island's creative traditions. A soft, earthy palette complements the surrounding tropical greenery and settles the whole into a register of calm.
The Villas
Rest takes its own form across twenty-two villas. Drawn from coastal aesthetics, their interiors hold a simplicity that keeps comfort at the center of every choice. Panoramic windows frame views of the lush landscape or the ocean, and open layouts give each villa a quiet sense of freedom. Bespoke furniture and handcrafted detail keep guests close to the island's culture, even in the most private moments of their stay.
Outdoor Spaces
Beyond the villas, the resort gathers its social life around a central pool and bar. Lush greenery and considered pathways frame the space for leisure and connection. A wooden bespoke canopy becomes one of the project's defining gestures, casting a shifting interplay of sunlight and shadow across the day, while the Envi Garden offers comfort in the middle of the island's natural beauty. Private showers and baths, set in secluded corners, complete the experience, each one settling quietly into its surroundings.
Where an island lends its nature, culture, and craft to a single design, hospitality becomes an experience of the place itself. Paje Beach Resort brings the three spirits of Zanzibar into one setting, and returns them to the guest as the feeling of being exactly where they are.
