Paddock 35 – Opunake
Standing atop a small knoll, the only relief on what was otherwise flat contour, inspired the idea to have the house sit above the land, rather than on it. Located in paddock number 35 on an exposed South Taranaki farm with expansive rural outlooks, a northerly vista of Mt Taranaki and the coast to the south & west, the elevated building platform enabling total access to these views and setting the house prominently on a plinth.
A key feature for the owners was ample entertaining space both internally and externally which is exemplified by the covered outdoor living space, where entertaining is extended year-round with an open log fire. This space is connected to the large kitchen which serves as a family kitchen and a hub for the various community projects that the owners partake in and support.
Every bedroom and living space accesses northerly sun and a spectacular view of the mountain. The kitchen and office enjoy coastal views and a line of sight to the milking shed. Attention has been given to the entry points on this home, the front door positioning greets visitors via a board walk, whilst the farm entrance and workshop are concealed at the back of the house out of view from the road.
A 130m2 high spec workshop for the 4x4 racing car was also key in the client’s brief, as was the need for exchange student accommodation. Additional bedrooms across the front of the home host regular visits from friends and family.
The project expresses a combination of kiwi rural vernacular through the use of corrugated zincalume and timber cladding in an exciting and modern form. The form evolved from the development of an idea where simple timber trusses allowed extreme overhangs. The overhangs are swept up over the structure the way the wind sweeps across the land. The form appears to lean with the wind, inspired by the rows of nearby pine and macrocarpa trees.
With the house set above the land the ground was contoured to the height of the original knoll with aggregate from the farm quarry and contained with volcanic boulders excavated from the site. Stonework for the chimneys was carefully selected to reflect the hues of the local igneous andesite rock.
The large living wing provides shelter from the prevailing westerly to the inground pool and large outdoor living spaces. The main bedrooms and living spaces are connected by a 33m long Purple Heart timber boardwalk extending across the front of the home. The bathrooms are luxuriously appointed and include a custom mural alongside the main bathroom deep soak tub. Other features include a mudroom and laundry that are “rural” sized.
Sustainable features focus on energy efficiency with window heights, building orientation and thermal mass carefully calculated to maximise solar gain which is retained through an R4.3 MAXraft floor slab, thermally broken aluminium glazing and high levels of wall and roof insulation. 12KW of photovoltaic panels concealed on the roof further offset the building’s energy costs.
