A Victorian semi-detached terrace that was converted to a 3 bedroom plus study for a young couple and their newborn.
original house was 5m wide and, whilst in a Heritage Conservation Area, we argued successfully for the 1m breezeway to be absorbed into the design. The front facade and side walls were kept and the rest was basically treated as an insertion.
The design idea hinged on the placing of the kitchen immediately next to entry which freed up the program to explode the space to the rear dramatically. The upper level of 2 bedrooms/walk-in robe and ensuites, was then positioned as a floating box detached from the party walls, a complete surprise in this typology and creates an opportunity that allows for maximum light to penetrate in these normally dark and depressing terraces.
