Located atop the Pacific Heights of Potrero Beach, this 500 m² private residence is conceived as a contemporary tropical home that responds carefully to climate, topography, and long-term sustainability.
The architectural composition is defined by clean horizontal lines and generous roof overhangs that provide effective protection from intense sun and seasonal rains, while framing uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean and sunsets. The elevated position allows constant ocean breezes, making natural cross-ventilation a key driver of the design and significantly reducing the need for mechanical cooling.
The program includes three bedrooms, a home office, and a sequence of indoor-outdoor living spaces organized around a lifted swimming pool, expansive terraces, and a yoga deck integrated into the surrounding landscape. Large openings and deep transitions between interior and exterior blur boundaries and reinforce a strong connection to the site.
Material selection emphasizes warmth, durability, and local craftsmanship. Natural teak wood is used for shading elements and finishes, paired with locally produced concrete floor slabs that provide thermal mass and longevity. The lighting design is intentionally restrained and warm, enhancing spatial depth while maintaining a calm, residential atmosphere.
Sustainability strategies are embedded throughout the project, including solar energy systems with battery storage, solar water heating, passive ventilation, and the extensive use of locally sourced Costa Rican materials. The result is a climate-responsive residence that balances contemporary architectural expression with environmental responsibility and a strong sense of place.
