At a time when most new residential development in San Francisco relies on hard edges and cool contemporary design trends, 1645 Pacific takes its cues from the rich historic and artistic aesthetic found in the pre-war architecture of the area. 1645 Pacific borrows the best of the past and brings it forward. Located at the nexus of three neighborhoods—Nob Hill, Russian Hill, and Pacific Heights—the approximately 80,000-square-foot complex includes a new 6-story residential block and the remodel and partial preservation of an adjacent garage dating from 1907.
Thoroughly modern in terms of construction and amenities, the development includes 39 residential units as well as parking and support spaces. The residential units sit above three street-level retail spaces that support commercial activity along Pacific Avenue. Stylistically, 1645 Pacific Avenue recalls the classic, turn-of-the-century apartment houses of Russian Hill, noted for their Arts & Crafts aesthetic. The street front is a lively composition of sculptural elements, bays, traditional windows, and wrought iron. Local artist Zio Ziegler executed a heroically scaled mural (23 x 6 meters) across an otherwise blank retaining wall. Located at the back of the site, it is seen from all south-facing units though not visible from the street. Another mural, also by Ziegler, is featured in the cozy lobby. A roof deck with views across the city is accessible for building tenants.
