P56 Villa - DUBAI
Concept Note
Nestled in the Dubai Hills residential development, the Golyan House is a premium villa scheme designed for a private client. The project takes cues from a historically introverted Islamic culture that has rapidly transformed itself onto the global platform. The house presents a monolithic cubist aesthetic from the outside, all clad in beige grey travertine marble slabs. With restricted openings on the front façade the house reflects an introverted approach. The main entrance into a double heighted lobby has been taken from the side consciously recessed and obscured from public view. While the entrance celebrates double height glazing owing to the heat and excessive quantum of light that pours in, the same has been shielded from the outside with a custom designed metal screen. The metal screen has an abstracted pattern derived from the graphic of an Islamic arch. The lofty entrance metal door of the house has been incorporated into the screen design.
The almost spartan entrance lobby walls anointed in the same external cladding of travertine give the space a sense of continuity from the outside. Strategically positioned, the lobby presents a dramatic zigzag staircase that connects to the upper floors. With its walls clad in fluted wooden paneling the staircase exudes a sense of warmth to the minimalistic interiors.
The lobby is flanked on one side by the formal living and dining space separated internally by a custom designed metal screen. Both these spaces open out to a compact private garden and pool deck perfect for an evening sundowner.
The other side of the lobby houses the puja room, a family living interconnected with a private study and a functional minimalistic kitchen. Dark wood paneling unifies these spaces to create seamless transitions into one another.
The upper floor houses multiple bedrooms that are designed for comfort and minimalistic living. Neatly concealed into the fluted paneling of the staircase is a door that leads to the basement. In addition to utility spaces the basement houses a media lounge designed to enjoy lazy weekend afternoons over some binge movie watching. The lounge opens onto a sunken open to sky court that not only brings light into the space but also gives guests direct access from the entrance drop off.
With the restrained use of materials, the project aims to create a bold statement through its architectural expression and interior aesthetic.
