Trace ground
I went to a place to build a house and walked around the town in ruins after the wildfire. It was a typical rural village. The tranquil scenery in the village showed me that there used to be low-lying houses on the ground. The village had a magnificent view of Ulsan Rock of Seoraksan Mountain. If I designed a bi-level house to occupy the scenery of Ulsan Rock, it would seem too selfish. That’s why I suggested a one-story house and considered its layout.
Design for minimum space
The demands of the elderly couple are simple living and minimal space. I organized three units that looked separate but connected to each other. I considered the usefulness of management in terms of functionality.
One roof connecting the earth and the sky leads to the basement
The earth and the sky are connected somewhere in the place people live. The gap between red bricks on the horizon and the roof reflecting the sky was created as a place where life permeated. I designed the house, OUTUM-BAU JIB, to permeate the village and its scenery; that was what I was inspired by when I met its client, who was humble toward life, nature, and the world being given by God.
