Renovation and rooftop extension in a building at the foothills of Lycabettus Hill in Athens, on a steeply sloping site.
In recent years, the area has attracted a growing number of young residents and urban dwellers drawn to the vibrancy of the city center.
Numerous buildings of the same period can be found in the surrounding neighborhood. Their owners often choose to demolish them in order to construct new buildings featuring contemporary architecture.
The aim of our architectural approach was to maximize the building’s potential while formulating a compelling architectural proposal that preserves and unifies its temporal continuity.
This former three-story residence — assembled in phases between 1920 and 1955 — was comprehensively renovated and extended with a lightweight loft to form four independent apartments.
By adding an upper level, the building now consists of four distinct residences: a maisonette - ground and second floor, a compact apartment on the second floor, an apartment on the third floor and a loft created within the extension of the new fourth floor.
Interventions privilege retention of the original façades and compositional features, articulating a dialogue between the building’s early and mid 20th century design and contemporary construction techniques.
Structurally, the existing masonry was consolidated with gunite and a new metal framework was introduced to support the rooftop addition, allowing a clear material and structural distinction between old and new. A carefully chosen color palette emphasizes the palimpsest of the aforementioned construction phases.
The existing metal balcony railings were preserved and paired with newly conceived metal details. On the upper floors, cubic volumes protrude from the body of the building, playfully redefining its scale and shadows. Perforated claustras around the lower windows quietly mask HVAC equipment while reinforcing the building’s horizontal rhythm.
The project demonstrates a contemporary approach to the extension of an existing architectural body: highlighting the historical continuity, the architectural design connects the past with the present in this evolving urban house.
