Our New School Competition pursued an ambitious and noble goal—the creation of prefabricated-hall annex to the old model schools in Russia do not have the space.
Developing a project we could just as well stay indifferent to it. A well-known Russian proverb says, "All the best to children". That's it, we were guided in the design, striving to create not only functional but also aesthetic design, which would be interested in children and stimulate their desire to engage in sports and creatively develop in clubs and classes offered in this building.
Since school is a place where our children spend approximately one-third of the day, and we as professionals, want to influence this situation and using our ideas to give children the opportunity to quality employment, even in the old school, for who is this extension. This versatile unit is cheap and would hold a massive modernization of the Russian school in a very short time, our version of a new school ― a new possibility for our children.
Why our project?
The project elegantly solved all the technical challenges posed by competition, as we have found opportunity to correspond our message to the younger generation to the building: with an interesting shape and bright color to make the building a center of attraction for young people and to awaken in children a craving for sporting achievements, which was so famous for Russia. This seems especially true on the eve of the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014.
We find that in this case, aesthetics is no less important than functional, because children are very sensitive and impressionable and if beautiful and functional building will surround them, it will impact positively on their development and disposition.
Red, being the color of life and health in many cultures and synonym for 'beauty' in Russian language, color that we have chosen, as basic color is effective when it comes to finalizing the proposed solution.
Below is a description of the ReShape project
The project ReShape considers a possibility of joining pre-engineered multifunctional building to typical Russian school building. The project comprises gym with semi-transferable tribune for 238 seats. The building also includes secondary rooms and flexible-purpose spaces and commercial zones with independents entrance lobby. Flexible-purpose spaces have open-plan which is variable according to needs of client.
General characteristics
Total area: 956.78 sq. meters (incl. second floor — 176.95 sq. meters, build-up area 869.78 sq. Meters, total structural volume — 7785.02 cubic meters). The building is orthogonal with pitched roof from angles 5 degrees. For maximum insolation, facade and zenith window openings are planned. To achieve thermo isolation and safety characteristics, cell polycarbonate panel are suggested as translucent construction. The second floor has standard transferrable tribunes for 160 seats allowing using the space as an additional area for sport facilities.
Construction
The basement — beam and girder slab with little embedment. Supporting framework — prefabricated metal frame. Inner mezzanine structure — profiled metal flooring. Outer walls materials — thermo profile with warmth-keeping jacket. Outer protective wall and roof coverage — crease roof.
Interior finishing — gypsum track bed profile or decorative polymer panels. Window opening filling — hermetical fixed cell polycarbonate panels 16¬–25 mm. Interior separators — gypsum board.
