LivingSocial is an extremely fast growing company
offering local daily deals in an ever expanding number of markets. As a young company, they needed to establish
a headquarters office that expressed their values, culture, and brand, while
also providing space to accommodate their rapid growth.
The designers worked closely with the company’s
leadership to create a concept that expressed their energetic vision. The use of LivingSocial’s branding and
company values throughout the space serves as a source of pride and motivation.
As a social company centered in an urban
setting, the overriding concept was to emulate the city atmosphere. The design of the space creates an active
work environment that continually inspires the team to push the envelope.
The space plan is
organized to promote a collaborative team environment, with open,
benching-style work spaces and a variety of conference and meeting rooms. Informal
meeting areas are defined throughout the space by uniquely detailed ‘planters’.
Other examples of innovative detailing come with the wood stack wall at the
reception area and with the specification of reclaimed, antique doors at each
office and conference room. By using
standard materials in unexpected ways, distinctive spaces and details were
created while keeping costs down. Multiple
ceiling treatments and playful lighting modulate scale at various ceiling
heights and add an interesting spatial aesthetic.
Maintaining the history of the company and the building
were important as well. The custom bathtub
conference table recalls LivingSocial’s first office, while the semi-exposed
columns and exposing of the 2nd floor ‘atrium’ space reveal historic
qualities of the building.
The overall design gives a sense of visual excitement
and playful vibrancy, providing a space that encourages effective, functional
collaboration, while also providing an environment where employees feel relaxed
and comfortable to do their best work, even while burning the midnight oil.
