Ostional Ocean Villa: The Modern Tropical Industrial Beach House.
Nestled on the shores of Ostional Beach in Nosara, Costa Rica, this house is a meticulous blend of an industrial contemporary style and sustainable tropical design. Its architectural concept revolves around the idea of creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing residents to connect with the breathtaking tropical environment. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive glass doors open the living spaces to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the majestic waves braking in the Pacific Ocean.
The focal point of the house is its unique living room, where high ceilings create an expansive atmosphere and where a small mezzanine becomes an intimate lookout area to enjoy amazing views. Wooden louvers with selected organic shapes were placed at the west side windows, providing both sun protection and creating captivating plays of light and shadow. This design feature not only breaks the rigid linearity of the composition but also has a rational functionality, it helps to regulate the temperature inside the house, reducing the need for artificial cooling systems.
The pool is an extension of the living space of the first level, it integrates with the main structure, and it’s surrounded by terraces and overhanging balconies that create shade and interaction between the spaces. It’s a constant reminder of the connection of the project with the ocean and it’s an essential element of the house experience.
The finishes of the house are inspired by a tropical minimalist concept, where exposed steel structure painted black, raw concrete walls and Teak wood ceilings are the protagonists. By working with this color and texture palette, it complements the natural tones of the landscape, and it makes the project more adaptable to interior design choices and changes trough time. Locally produced mosaic tiles with geometric designs adorn the kitchen, bathrooms, and floor terraces, adding a touch of local flair and color to the spaces, without disbalancing the minimalistic concept.
Another unique characteristic of this house is that it can adapt to different functions by closing and integrating spaces with folding and sliding glass doors. The living room can open to 360-degree views and become an open terrace, having the kitchen, and dining open or closed when desired. This makes the space more usable and efficient when dealing with mosquitos, the heat and air conditioning systems. Part of the concept of the house was to make it a multifunctional building with the addition of multiple rooftop terraces, offering different experiences. These terraces are designed to be flexible spaces that can be used for a variety of purposes, from outdoor dining and lounging to yoga, meditation and exercising.
From a sustainability perspective this project was designed and built using local materials such as Teak wood, that was brought from local reforested farms. A prefabricated concrete wall system was modulated in the design process, this method minimized the environmental impact of the construction on site. These panels were transported on site ready to be assembled, just like the metal frames of the main structure. A carefully placed water treatment plant was designed for the project eliminating water contamination that could reach the beach and disbalance the marine ecosystem.
This project is a testament to the possibilities of living on the shores of the tropical dry forest of Cosa Rica. It’s an example of innovative design that connects with its natural surroundings. It proposes a blend of elegance and comfort, making it the perfect retreat for those seeking a genuine coastal lifestyle.
