STUDIOS Architecture recently completed Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe’s relocation of their headquarters in New York. STUDIOS provided detailed programming and approximately twenty real estate studies / test fits in order to conceptualize the perfect space to coincide with the anticipated growth projection of 230 lawyers at the prestigious law firm. As one of the buildings became a more attractive option to the client, STUDIOS realized the need to convey the real design potential in the building and jumped into some basic conceptual design development. The approach was predominantly a reaction to the very rational and rectilinear nature of the base building architecture. The building itself didn’t necessarily lend itself as a source of design inspiration creating the challenge of infusing excitement into the space. STUDIOS decided to counteract the rectilinear language of the building by exploring opportunities to create an experience with complex geometries. Our concept embraced the rectilinear nature of the building where it made the most sense while also implementing more organic forms, shapes and experiences wherever possible. The experience was intended to celebrate the juxtaposition of organic forms in combination with rectilinear.
