The Orafacial Center is unlike a typical dental office in that patients are treated within multiple disciplines, including orofacial pain, anatomy, implantalogy, cosmetology, physical therapy, massage, and eastern therapies. The doctor’s idea was to have a center that felt warm, comfortable, and serene without feeling like a “zen spa”, which would not be taken seriously as a medical office. With a limited budget of $80 sq. ft., we decided to focus on the ceiling, understanding that this would be the patient’s main view while at the center. The existing ceiling was very low, with beams running in multiple directions. It was understood that the ceiling would come down even lower in order to accommodate lighting, extensive dental equipment and accompanying mechanics. The solution was to create an innovative lighting design without compromising luminosity, while simultaneously minimizing the impact of heavy ceiling dental equipment. This was achieved by a scheme that could be tailored to the ceiling conditions of each operatory station in which a cavern was built to house the dental track and conceal colored lights, both of which the doctor has found greatly relaxes her patients and let’s her do what she does best.
