Orchid House is a fully-functional residential solar house prototype, designed by the Graduate Institute of Architecture (a.k.a. Team Unicode) of the National Chiao Tung University, for the Solar Decathlon Europe 2014, Versailles, France.

Team Unicode created this prototype that seeks to act as a comfortable living space for a small family while being entirely harmonized with nature and located on top of existing buildings in Taipei. Designed with respect to the local conditions of Taiwan – island climate, urban context, social housing issues and innovative technologies, the prototype functions in a similar way as a plant in harvesting, circulating and recycling solar energy and water. The most important issues in Taiwan are high temperatures and extreme humidity; therefore the prototype was also equipped with eco-friendly systems to use as little energy as possible for interior climate control.

The project won 1st Place in Urban Design, Transportation and Affordability Award, 2nd Place in Innovation Award, 3rd Place in Energy Efficiency Award, and 3rd Place in Public Choice Online Award.
