Pioneering the latest design and engineering advances in smartphone industry, OPPO prides itself on its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. The design of 450,000-square-meter research and development complex in the heart of China's silicon valley in Dongguan is conceived as an expression of those values. The overall masterplan spans over five city blocks facing Dongguan's major thoroughfare, Dezheng Middle Road and designed to accommodate more than 6,000 employees. The master plan includes a 216-meter tall, 100,000-square-meter office tower, 50,000-square-meter R&D center, 50,000-square-meter OPPO College, a floating gallery over an intersection, a kindergarten and a number of office, residential towers.
The architectural vision was to create an uninterrupted connection among all programs in the campus, placing a firm emphasis on the idea of creating a cohesive community and a collaborative workplace. This is achieved through an introduction of interconnected circles in plan. The central portion of circles are always left as voids allowing various functions to take place; atrium with vertical circulations, interactive meeting spaces, courtyards and a sunken plaza. The circular geometry makes the building to appear light and sleek. The reading of series of curved elevations is not only dynamic but demonstrates OPPO's fluent and flexible thought process.
The campus is flourished with nature. The circular building profiles in plan allow spacious green, public open spaces along the peripheries. The interconnected podium volume is lifted up from the ground, creating permeable blocks for all pedestrians to circulate through the central courtyards. The circulation strategy creates a sectional division between public realm and more sensitive development areas. The ground plane is always open to all, the connected L2 is semi-public and L3 and up are designated only for OPPO employees. This allows visitors to have the spectacular atrium view in the main office tower, test latest products in OPPO showroom, experience dining and exhibition. Another highlight of the podium is its rooftop. A 2.3km long running track on a landscaped outdoor environment is provided for the health and wellbeing of employees.
Additional design details on a few key buildings are as follows:
The iconic 216-meter tall office tower marks the pinnacle. It is the most sculptural tower with a flaring form to the top. This allows for more employees to have a view to the beautiful Dalingshan forest Park and reservoirs to the north. The center is left as a void. This tall atrium lobby functions as a meeting space, a transient space to the lifts and an exhibition of art and technology. This 42-storey tall tower is divided into four office zones and highlighted with a tall sky hall on top. The sky hall is multifunctional hosting a series of special events and corporate gatherings.
The five story tall R&D center is the most appropriate building to demonstrate OPPO's ethos. It is very much open to public with a showroom, visitor center and dining at L1. From the visitor center, one is able to escalator up to the central loop. The actual R&D floors are then placed on top of the open podium rooftop. The large central atrium is highlighted by a sunken plaza. People in the employee canteen at B1 will have a view of the plaza, not to mention the penetration of daylight.
The Central Loop has two main functions. It is a transient space as well as an exhibition space. It becomes the heart of the project where all L2 passages are connected to. It also demonstrates the cultural value of OPPO and directly displays it to the public. The Loop is carefully placed on four mounds at the intersection appearing as if it floats.
