OPEN HOUSE : INTIMATE HOME
Ensuring privacy in a high-density closely packed neighbourhood and providing multiple family functions within a site smaller than a tennis court were the main challenges when designing this semi-detached residence located in Kuala Lumpur for a family of seven.
Designed over 3 levels, the lowest is open and more public with a swimming pool, landscaped garden and rear courtyard as well as an open plan living, dining, and, kitchen with adjoining utility spaces. On level one, openness gives way to intimacy within which the family bedrooms, open plan study as well as secret garden are located. At the top of the home is the gym, sauna, guest bedroom, AV room, pantry and dining area – with this last space able to transform from private family space to al fresco entertaining space. The capacity of the renovated home to accommodate all the functions listed above was a key design challenge.
Innovation led to the design of the flexible façade screen, which combines the use of aluminium frames on a steel structure while utilising 9,000 strips of locally-sourced Merpauh tropical hardwood.
Acting as a heat and light filter, the screen wraps around the upper two levels, providing intimacy with an option for openness, with sliding and swing doors to juxtapose against every window and door of the main building envelope, whilst also engendering a singular building aesthetic and optimising environmental sustainability.
The façade screen consequently allowed more use of glass increasing natural light penetration, especially to areas deeper within the building envelope as well as to the lower levels (given the site’s relatively lower ground level). At ground level, this led to one juxtaposed internal-external space achieved by drawing in curated landscaping – including a 5-meter high green wall at the rear courtyard – into the open living and dining spaces.
