The apartment is located in a prefab panel block from the 1960s in a reviving district of Prague. Our design for the renovation transformed this relatively confined space of 56 m2 to an open modern and comfortable apartment for a young client.
The concept of the open apartment allows for one connected space for living, cooking, dining and relaxing, yet there is a possibility to divide it when needed. We came up with a design, in which used a sliding wooden custom made door in place of a former partition wall.
We were also able to bring more light to the space by extending the window adjoining the balcony door, which improved the quality of the space immensely. A new access to the kitchen area was created, which can be also opened or closed by a sliding door.
The most significant aspect of the design is the subtle play with materials, colors and patterns. The client preferred natural materials and color palette, which we reflected in our design. For the flooring we chose natural light oak wood parquets laid in herringbone pattern. For the hallway and the kitchen floor we selected parquet shaped tiles of 3 different light natural colors and designed their pattern also in a herringbone shape to create a playful connection to the wooden floor.
Most of the furniture in the apartment was created by a finish carpenter based on our designs. The materials used for the furniture elements are mostly oak wood veneer sheets and varnished MDF boards in green color. For the kitchen worktop and splash back we selected black granite in matte finish. The color black has been used as a complementary color for handles and lighting.
Overall all pieces of furniture were designed with emphasis on maximizing the storage space of the apartment, while simultaneously maintaining the impression of a free open space.
This project is an example, how an old apartment in a housing estate from the communist era can be transformed by architects to a contemporary comfortable home.
