Having recently acquired nearly 280,000 square feet of office space, OneBeacon Insurance wanted to consolidate employees from several existing locations in Foxboro and downtown Boston to a new headquarters in Canton. OneBeacon is one of the leading property/casualty insurance groups doing business solely through independent agents. The organization attributes its success to open communication between all groups, including senior management, and a belief that sharing ideas is important. To support this culture, OneBeacon asked Margulies Perruzzi Architects to design their headquarters with no private offices and a generous number of conference rooms for the approximately 1,200 employees who will work there. To break up a large, meandering space and to help orient people as they move through the building, seasonal themes were created within the space. Four quadrants each feature a different color to represent the seasons of the year: purple for winter, yellow for summer, orange for fall and green for spring. These seasonal colors highlight workstation accent walls and furniture in each quadrant.Working closely with renowned landscape architect Nelson Hammer, RLA, Principal of Hammer Design, the design team also transformed an unappealing existing courtyard into an interior urban park with fountains, benches and greenery to meet OneBeacon’s request for an environment where employees want to stay in the building to eat lunch and relax. “This will mark the first time in twenty years that we will have our major corporate headquarters team together in the same facility. We will gain the natural efficiencies of having the employees collocated,” said John R. Ferrari, vice president of real estate at OneBeacon. “The interior courtyard has already proven itself to be an effective and versatile space. The design team did an excellent job creating a classic New England exterior space for our employees to use. The team did an excellent job in interpreting our request that the space be designed to be used throughout the business day.”Additionally, the 1960s-style cafeteria and food servery were completely gutted to create a new kitchen and concession area. OneBeacon hired a health-conscious food service provider, Guckenheimer, to manage the company cafeteria. Guckenheimer’s holistic approach to food is “really healthy and really good to eat”. Additional employee benefits include a newly refurbished and expanded fitness center and a health services suite.
