One Grand Books is an independent bookstore in the historic Catskills town of Narrowsburg, New York. The store occupies a circa 1918 commercial storefront on the town’s Main Street and overlooks a wide bend of the Delaware River. An existing interior space was re-conceived for owner Aaron Hicklin's concept of a curated and revolving selection of 1,000 texts- composed from 100 lists of 10. The selections of “celebrated thinkers, writers, artists, and other creative minds” represent the ten books they would take to their metaphorical desert island.
The relatively small 500 SF (46.5 SM) space benefits from a large storefront window, high ceilings, and additional windows at side and rear. An early decision was made to remove existing partitions, treat the store as a single volume, and restore the historic pressed-tin wall and ceiling finishes.
New millwork was custom designed and sized to display the individual book collections. The cabinetry sections alternate adjustable standard width shelves with deeper fixed levels that both accommodate displays and provide concealed LED lighting. In addition, the faces of the shelves are provided with a recessed lip and concealed magnets to hold the constantly changing labels describing the book selections.
At the rear of the store, the necessity for a small bathroom and its resulting enclosure prompted an exploration of pattern. To minimize it’s visual impact the bathroom was conceived as a “shed” within the larger store. Above its ceiling, a loft space was created for storage. The paneling pattern followed a series of car trips to the site, in which the designer discovered 1940s-era “novelty” asphalt siding added to older vernacular dwellings. The fake stone patterns of the siding have a particular graphic quality that inspired their transcription through CNC routing to the millwork panels. The volume of the bathroom enclosure was emphasized by use of a pocket sliding door and exposing the paneling through the abutting shelving unit. Adjacent, a small pantry provides specialty teas and snacks for browsing customers.
The palette of new materials and colors for the design were selected to enhance the unique qualities of books. American White Ash was used throughout the custom millwork and chosen for its subtle warm tone and regular grain. To complement the printed page, a range of warm grey colors were selected for wall finishes and linoleum flooring. Indirect LED lighting was used in combination with a warm white ceiling finish to provide an ambient glow to the interior.
At the store entrance, a sculptural display was designed for the full length window. A series of uniquely colored metal shelves are balanced across three steel vertical ladders. The variety of rung spacing offers multiple arrangements for the shelving and a kinetic display of books.
