― Gathering Under the Roof ―
A cafe within ONDPARK, a new playground heated by the natural blessings of Takeo. By opening the park to the community as a Park-PFI, our aim was to 'embed public value within the project'. Here, public value means creating a welcoming space where people can simply be without needing a specific purpose. We envisaged a space where anyone could relax, much like people naturally gathering under a large tree to chat and celebrate.
The seating area was initially designed without walls, as a roofed space blending with the surrounding trees. Smoke vents were placed in the transom sections, curtains were hung below the beams and shade nets were installed externally — a structure that controls sunlight, wind and rain 'only to a certain degree'. Our design prioritised 'comfort in harmony with nature', allowing wind, light and the sound of rain to reach the body directly rather than providing the uniform experience of a fully air-conditioned space.
Later, to accommodate a variety of activities, glass exterior walls were installed, transforming the space into one with a more stable environment. However, this was not just a case of enclosing the space; it was a way of incorporating the former openness as a 'transparent membrane', thus deepening the original concept. Light and shadow, and the swaying of trees, still filter indoors, preserving the sensation of being outside. The semi-outdoor concept evolved into a form capable of responding to a wider range of uses.
The semi-outdoor terrace features a lattice structure built using locally sourced Sugi wood via the Home Connector construction method. As an artificial element within the natural park, the deliberately uniform structure of the terrace aims to provide a sense of protection despite being outdoors. Spending time under its roof reveals the comfort of artificiality within nature.
This place is more than just a shop; it's a space with a 'new publicness', where locals gather to relax and chat. Even as its form changes, its philosophy remains strong and adaptable. This is certainly a landscape where people and nature, inside and outside, and public and private gently intertwine.
