The OMAC [2] Magic Box offers a
hyper-flexible performance space that can be divided and subdivided at
will by performers and the public alike.
The Main Theater opens up to entertain
people in the square, allowing for easily staged performances and
spontaneous celebrations. Its roof slides open to shade the square to
the south and allows cooling breezes inside. The smaller Studio Theater
roof tilts up to project performances to the University quarter while
capturing energy from the sun's rays on its solar collectors.
The inner practical workings are hidden
from view much like an illusionist's stage prop: loading docks,
flytowers and craft shops are shared between both theatres in a
back-to-back configuration. The structure is steel-framed CMU with
floors of reclaimed wood, dents and all. The theaters are clad in metal
panels with corrugated steel doors. All components are modular and easy
to assemble- like a giant stage set spilling into the square. A sense of mystery prevails as shows are
being prepared: panels tilt, slide, rise and disappear. These panels
can be angled to amplify acoustic concerts to the square. Lights dim,
shine, reflect and refract.
The OMAC [2] Magic Box will entertain and
reenergize downtown Belfast with its ability to house and project an
endless variety of dynamic performances...
