The Olive Oil Museum, is located in Bobadela, Oliveira do Hospital and was a dream of the owner, António Dias, who had a collection tracing the history of the production of olive oil, from the time of the Romans to contemporary times.
The concept of space was designed as a metaphor, it should be an iconic image that people would easily recognize. The idea of combining the use of an iconic image with colors and shapes that integrate with Nature has always been present and thus the idea of the olive branch arose.
It was asked to transmit “the history of olive oil, through rooms that were designed in a chronological way”. The way the oil narrows throughout the production process was the motto for the central area of the museum, with which all rooms communicate, ending in a funnel shape and facing the Serra da Estrela.
The program of the rooms was distributed and from there, began to imagine the shape of the museum, inverting the process, adapting the program to a preconceived idea.
The extensive amount of artefacts required a certain room space, but the terrain was finite, so the building grew, never losing sight of its scale and proportion, up to the maximum that the terrain configuration allowed.
The project began to be planned in 2012, and was inaugurated in 2019. Initially, the idea was to use pigmented concrete in the construction, however, this was not considered financially viable and the plans changed: the structure was divided between buildings in a structure only of reinforced concrete and others in traditional construction of concrete and brick, using as finish / insulation in all the volumes that make up the Museum, the ETICS System.
In the space of the Museu do Azeite there is also a shop, an auditorium and a restaurant with panoramic views of Serra da Estrela.
