Oliva Ristorante is located on the northeastern side of Corfu, in one of the most beautiful parts of the island, in the Nissaki area. The plot where the project was implemented was an old olive press, as olive groves occupy most of the Corfiot countryside, with olive trees dominating the landscape of the island. The aim of the design process was to highlight the genius loci. The central design axis was the olive press and it's history. The main intention was to integrate important traditional elements into an ultimately modern space with ethnic and boho elements. A second key compositional element of the proposal was to achieve an unobstructed view. With this in mind, large and massive interventions in the space were avoided.
The space, following the natural landscape, was arranged in levels, depending on the functions and uses of the store, (reception area, restaurant and cocktail area, brunch area, pier), so that the visitor can have a direct visual relationship with the sea from every part of the space. One of the characteristic architectural elements observed on the island is the impressive arches and labyrinthine alleys, elements that were integrated into the design with the level transitions and existing staircases leading to the sea. The main material of the intervention is the use of stone, a material that already existed in the surrounding area and in combination with the new interventions, it's use is fully harmonized with the natural landscape, contributing decisively to the perfect harmony of the overall composition. By using claustra, a material of reference to the past, wood, a basic material that plays an important role in popular building, pressed cement mortar, a modern material that blends perfectly with the two previous ones, as well as details with matting, the union of the past with the present, one of the main issues-challenge of the project, is perfectly achieved.
The owner's intention was to create a space that would reflect a sophisticated interpretation of traditional Greek cuisine with high quality products, attracting many food lovers from all over the world. This intention was reflected in the spatial qualities created throughout the space. Thus each level defines it's own function, but at the same time it is an integral part of the whole.
The team's goal for the overall image of the project was to create atmosphere and comfort in the space. The special lighting and colour choices in earthy tones are in harmony with the natural landscape, with the shade of the olive tree colour dominating. The design of Oliva Ristorante achieves a harmonious integration with the natural environment, the identification of the space with the needs that shaped it, an architectural ensemble simple and comprehensive without expressive verbosity, challenging for it's revelation.
