Outstanding Exterior Renovation of a Sacred Landmark Award
Old Stone Church is listed on the Cleveland Landmarks Commission. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
It was determined that during an earlier restoration project, (not involving Kordalski Architects) completed in 1998, certain restoration work was not performed by today’s standards and was in need of correction. The current restoration/preservation project was initiated by the church board to correct that work and address other items that needed attention.
Besides the physical scope of work, as project architects our criteria included:
1. Creating a building exterior and repairs that (with minimum maintenance) will last for years.
2. This restoration/preservation project will be about small details – properly implemented – not major facade revisions. These details will create an improved building envelope.
3. Once completed, the outcome should incorporate measures necessary to sustain the existing form and materials of the historic church.
4. Evaluate the existing conditions in order to determine the appropriate level of intervention required.
The exterior restoration/preservation project at Old Stone Church included the following: complete exterior repointing, stone patching repair and pinning, window painting, exterior door restoration, and renovation of the louvers and surrounds of the two towers. Interior work included installation of bird screening in the eight tower louvers and the installation of steel cross-bracing within both towers.
