For 800 years Old Market has been the primary eastern entrance to the City of Bristol and contains one of the most important collections of historic buildings in the city. Whilst much of this heritage has been protected, major planning and transport related interventions in the 20th century have left it isolated despite it’s proximity to the city centre. Over the last 20 years, business and retail have struggled in the area leaving a place that outsiders perceive as unsafe and undesirable. As part of the process of developing their vision for the area and as a step towards creating their own neighbourhood plan we advised the Old Market Community Association to involve the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment (with funding from DCLG) in a two-day community planning workshop to identify issues and discover interventions that can help to strengthen the area’s character and appearance. The workshop is the first stage in the preparation of a Neighbourhood Plan for the Old Market Area.
