This design imagines a Summer House delicately seated into the landscape and organized around 4 key views of Church’s 250-acre masterpiece design. The oversized windows or apertures create “frames” for living landscape paintings of the Main House, Forest, Grove, and Lake. The roof alignment, building color, plantings, and location minimize the visual impact within this historic landscape while maintaining historic views between the Lake and the Main House. This elegantly simple design creates comfortable and inspiring new place for recreational, educational, and philanthropic activities through the summer and shoulder seasons through the celebration of Church’s three-dimensional, living work of art.
The summer house design for Olana is part of a summer exhibition organized by The Olana Partnership, in collaboration with the New York Chapters of The American Institute of Architects (AIANY) and the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA-NY). The invited landscape architects, architects, and designers will showcase their design sketches in response to the "Summer House" labeled on the old plan for the property by Churchs' son.
