Okupa – Urban Mixed-Use Space | Athens, Greece
Located in the heart of Athens, OKUPA is a mixed-use hospitality destination conceived as a place where travelers, locals, creatives, and entrepreneurs come together. More than a hotel, it is an urban platform that dissolves traditional social boundaries, fostering connection, collaboration, and cultural exchange.
Inspired by the Spanish verb ocupar ("to occupy"), the project redefines the role of hospitality by combining boutique accommodation, listening bar, coworking spaces, a café, a restaurant, a multipurpose space and a dynamic program of cultural events. From exhibitions and live music to workshops and film screenings, OKUPA functions as a vibrant creative hub within the city.
The architectural intervention is based on the dialogue between the existing structure and contemporary living. Rather than concealing the building's history, the design embraces it, drawing inspiration from the unique coexistence of ancient ruins and modern life that characterizes Athens. Existing elements are preserved and reinterpreted, creating a layered architectural identity where heritage and contemporary design naturally converge.
A restrained yet expressive material palette reinforces this concept. Exposed concrete, raw steel, natural timber, and textured finishes establish an honest architectural language, while vibrant colours introduce energy and warmth, creating a distinctive atmosphere that is both industrial and welcoming.
Every space reflects an artisanal approach to hospitality. Vintage furniture sourced from local markets sits alongside iconic mid-century and Space Age pieces, while libraries filled with vinyl records and well-travelled books invite guests to linger. A carefully curated concept store celebrates independent Greek designers, reinforcing the project's commitment to local craftsmanship and creativity.
OKUPA is not just a place to stay, work, or eat — it is a living, evolving space, full of meaning, that invites people to occupy it with intention, presence, and community.
