As Design Architect, SM+H Architects worked closely with the client team and University for the new site strategy and design for the renovation of the existing Veterinary Hospital at The Ohio State University. The design includes the addition of a new structure to house classrooms, medical offices and meeting rooms, a new entrance lobby and waiting area, exterior courtyard, and other medical support spaces.
The Site Planning Phase studied and anticipated other University initiatives and built upon past planning efforts. The site design accommodates new perimeter landscaped areas and outdoor programs for dog walking spaces as well as a new Donor’s Courtyard. The economical width of the new addition in conjunction with the internal court yard at the west facade encourage daylight and natural ventilation. SM+H explored design options by way of physical models, virtual models, and 3D renderings. Using these tools and careful analysis of existing conditions and context, SM+H developed a massing for the new addition that leverages daylight access with a new central courtyard—not only an asset to students and faculty, but also a highly-valued donor opportunity.
