The O’Hara Residence or the “Jamaican Great House” is located on Patrick’s Island, an established residential area with gated access in Grand Cayman, BWI. The client’s main requirements were for Design Cayman to create an elevated, hurricane resistant Jamaican Great House with a viewing tower and an orchid garden. Although the choice of architectural styles in the area is quite diverse, this project is the first to introduce the traditional Great House approach with a significant touch of contemporary design. The two-storey , five bedroom family home has three key design elements, a double height courtyard garden with shaded louvered bridges connecting the main house to the guest suite and media suite; a three-storey circulation tower with an observation deck; and the large open concept lounge/dining “great room”, from which all interior spaces stem. Linked by 18 foot wide sliding doors which stack into a wall pocket, the client’s desire for a true indoor/outdoor living experience is realized.
The home also includes a rainwater harvesting cistern to provide top up water for the Koi pond, irrigation for the gardens and emergency grey water for the home in the event of a hurricane. The Roof has been fully insulated using spray applied foam to minimize heat gain. Insulated walls to the main living spaces lessen the heat gain from those walls exposed to extended periods of direct sunlight
Where most of homes in the Cayman Islands are sealed and air conditioned for the majority of the year, here a true indoor outdoor lifestyle was required, therefore natural ventilation was of paramount importance. Fully operable windows shielded by shutters and deep covered outdoor spaces accessed through wide doors were always a key element of the design.
